Menopause: The Best Teas for Symptom Relief

Every woman knows that menopause is  a natural part of life, but none of us seem really prepared for it. The symptoms are often justified with other causes and attributed, for example, to tiredness or insomnia.

In some women it occurs earlier, in others later, with pre- menopausal  hormones providing natural protection against certain diseases.

The first symptoms usually appear between the ages of forty-fifth and fifty: hot flashes, sweats and anxiety that throw our daily life out of balance.

Medical support can be of great help here. Additionally, we recommend natural teas that can help relieve menopause symptoms.

1. St. John’s wort

St. John’s wort ( Hypericum perforatum ) is a natural, widely used remedy for menopause. It particularly helps with  mood swings, such as sadness and irritability.

  • The internal use helps with anxiety, digestive problems, irritable bowel syndrome and capillary fragility.
  • This herb can be taken in the form of tea as well as applied topically. It also contains valuable essential oils.
  • St. John’s wort is rich in tannins with an antiseptic effect and also contains many vitamins.
  • It also contains hypericin, a substance with antidepressant properties that help improve mood in mild depression and fatigue.

St. John’s wort is of no use for more severe emotional problems (moderate or severe depression).

  • You can take 3 ml of St. John’s wort oil daily.
  • You can also make tea with 5 grams of dried St. John’s wort leaves and then drink it with a glass of water (200 ml).
  • If you are taking sleeping pills, antidepressants and antacids, we do not recommend drinking this tea (or at least not regularly).

2. Licorice

liquorice

Licorice (liquorice) contains glycyrrhizin, an active ingredient that helps regulate estrogen levels and alleviate menopausal symptoms at the same time.

  • Licorice (or liquorice) is rich in magnesium, vitamin C, flavonoids and beta-carotenes. It is very effective in treating tiredness, mood swings and mild depression.
  • Thanks to the valuable ingredients, liquorice works like natural estrogen and can therefore ensure a balanced hormone balance.
  • To achieve good results, we recommend drinking 3 grams of liquorice powder in the form of tea with a glass of water a day – ideally as soon as the first symptoms appear.

3. Passionflower and valerian tea

Teas
  • The passion flower ( Passiflora incarnata ) is a widely used herb for treating anxiety and insomnia. The way they work is similar to drugs that contain benzodiazepines (sedatives).
  • It increases performance, regulates the sleep cycle and also has a calming effect on the muscles.
  • When passionflower and valerian are combined, it can provide better treatment and promote restful sleep.
    • The combination of both plants helps against headaches, general malaise and anxiety. It can also be used to stabilize the heart rhythm.
    • You can have a valerian and passion flower tea an hour before bed. Bring 200 ml of water (a glass) to a boil along with 2 grams of valerian and 2 grams of passion flower. Sweeten the whole thing with a spoonful of honey (25 ml).

If you are already taking drugs that contain benzodiazepines , this tea is not recommended.
