Eat fruit with or without the peel?

We often ask ourselves whether, for example, apples, pears, citrus fruits, grapes, etc., can or should be eaten with or without the peel. The properties of other fruit peels such as bananas or pineapples can also surprise you.

In this article, we report on the positive and negative characteristics of fruit with or without shell to eat, to take advantage of all the valuable nutrients that are in fruit bowls.

What nutrients do the pods contain?

In the past, the whole fruit was always used, as the peel also provided valuable ingredients. These can also be used as home remedies for various diseases in the case of fruits whose peel is not eaten, e.g. lemons or oranges  .

The shell absorbs most of the sun’s energy and protects the inside from the elements. It contains the most fiber and has the most beautiful colors, which in turn is due to the fact that it contains the most nutrients.

With or without a bowl?

The problem with fruits and vegetables is that  numerous pesticides are used to encourage growth and protect them from vermin. This was not the case in the past, so the fruit could be eaten with the skin on.

Even if you wash the fruit well, the pollutants are still in the skin as they penetrate through the pores.

That is why it is recommended nowadays to always peel the fruit. Those who also want to benefit from the nutrients in the peel should  always choose certified organic quality  or, if possible, grow the fruit themselves.

In addition, the fruit should always be washed well with water and a little baking soda. The peel can be easily rubbed with a knife or fruit cleaner without removing it completely.

Which bowls are good for us?

If it is organic fruit, it is advisable to regularly eat the peel of the following fruits:

  • Apples:  The peel contains ursolic acid, which ensures healthy muscles, has anti-inflammatory effects, prevents high cholesterol levels and promotes collagen production. It also features pectin and fiber, which help relieve constipation.
  • Pears:  In order to benefit from all of the antioxidant effects, the peel of this delicious fruit should also be eaten. This contains more vitamin C than the fruit itself. In addition, it has a very filling effect and prevents constipation and intestinal diseases (such as colon cancer), as it contains soluble fiber.
  • Citrus fruits:  The peel has a strong antioxidant effect as it contains many flavonoids. These are advisable as a preventive measure against cancer, especially against skin and breast cancer. They also reduce the risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases. They contain a lot of vitamin C, have a detoxifying, dehydrating, relaxing and digestive effect.
  • Grapes:  The best nutrients in grapes, namely flavonoids, anthocyanins and especially resveratrol, are mainly found in the seeds and skin. These protect blood vessels and cardiovascular health in general and are powerful antioxidants.
  • Bananas:  Banana peels have an antibiotic and enzymatic effect and are recommended against fungal infections. We can then eat these raw or cooked after washing. The inner, white side can also be used to whiten the teeth (simply rub the teeth with it).
  • Pineapple:  The skin of this delicious fruit can be used to prepare therapeutic infusions or delicious drinks. These are very useful for treating fluid retention and indigestion.

About allergies

Some people are allergic to fruit bowls. Often, however, it is actually the chemical agents that contain them, not the peel itself. It is  therefore advisable to consume organic fruit,  especially when we eat the peel.
