You have just bought a beautiful new plant and now want to repot it. At first glance, this may seem very simple. But in reality it’s not that simple. Because there are a few things you need to consider before you start moving the plant to a new pot.

Be aware you about the fact that the repotting is not a natural one for the plants. Switching from one flower pot to the other requires a lot of energy for your green friends. Because you have to remember that such a step is not necessary in the natural environment of the plant.

Important considerations when repotting your plants

The right season for repotting

First of all, it is important whether you want to move the plant from a flower pot into the soil. Or whether you want to repot them in another container. For example, it doesn’t matter for a plant that you just bought. You can move them in soil or in a new flower pot at any time of the year. Because under no circumstances will it suffer much damage. And you can do it right after you buy it.

But if you want to move the plant from the ground into a pot, things look different: Because this always results in damage to the roots. Therefore, you should definitely wait until the plant’s activity is minimal before repotting. The best season for this is winter.

But you want to move your plant from a flower pot into the ground? Then you absolutely have to consider the aspect of watering. Because this is especially important if repotting takes place in summer. The plant should receive sufficient water, otherwise it dries out easily.

Choosing the right pot

One of the most important aspects of repotting is choosing the right pot. A pot that is too small is harmful to the plant. But too big a pot is not good for them either. Because then the plant is easily overwatered. And that eventually leads to it dying.

So it is necessary that you keep a close eye on the development of your plant and then choose a flower pot that is appropriate for its level of development. There should always be a space of a few centimeters both in depth and in width in the new pot. Incidentally, this also applies to plants that are still small, but will later be very large: For them, too, it is better that you always repot them according to their current size, i.e. several times over the course of time.

As for the material of the flower pots: both clay and plastic pots have their advantages and disadvantages. Plastic pots have the great advantage that they are cheap and very light. So you can easily transport them.

One of the downsides is that the sun can weaken the material over time. Another problem with plastic pots: The material is not porous like clay. This can make it difficult for the plant’s root system to develop properly.

Clay pots are very robust. In addition, the roots can develop well in it. From an aesthetic point of view, too, they are undoubtedly more beautiful than plastic pots. But their disadvantage is that on the one hand they are more expensive and on the other hand they break if they should accidentally tip over or fall.

Properly remove the plant from its old pot

The moment you take plants out of their old pot, you need to be extra careful. Especially if you want to repot them from one pot to another. You should take the plant out of the pot very carefully. Because in this way it does not lose the ball of earth that surrounds its roots. This will make it easier for her to adapt to her new flower pot.

The humidity of the potting soil is an important factor here. Because this task is much easier when the earth is a little damp. Then you can tap the pot lightly.
