Activities for children when it rains outside

Especially when it comes to children’s birthdays on rainy days, you are looking for activities for children that will keep them busy and entertaining in the house. We have some suggestions for you that work for many age groups and that you can adapt to your children individually.

Activities for children in bad weather

If the weather is bad, then you have to find activities for children that will keep the crowd of children at a children’s birthday party or other “fun company” happy.

Of course there are different activities for every age, but many of our ideas are variable enough for several age groups.

Children should be able to keep themselves busy, but if your child has invited friends over for a birthday, Mardi Gras, or something else, then you will need special activities for children.

Especially when it is a rainy day and the rascals want to be kept indoors. We have the following ideas:

Activities for children

Children’s activities: Slumber party

If your child’s birthday falls in autumn or winter, the chances are high that the party cannot take place outside. If you plan this in advance, the children’s birthday can also become a slumber party.

All children come in pajamas, are allowed to stay up late and you organize rather quieter program items, for example quizzing games or reading aloud, with the traditional pillow fight of course not missing!

Play pop star

All you need is a couple of music videos, a microphone (a ball of aluminum foil around the wooden spoon will do the trick), utensils for dressing up (weird clothes, costume jewelry, sunglasses, hats, caps, …), make-up (lipstick, blush, etc.) and one “Stage” (sheets).

The children sing to their favorite songs and dance, you shoot the “music video” from them on your mobile phone.

Activities for children: board games

Board and parlor games are sometimes quite expensive, but some libraries also lend such games. If not, you can buy used games as well.

There are games, for example the classic “Don’t get angry”, that children and parents of all ages enjoy. Note the recommendations given for the age of the players!

Handcraft

You don’t need to buy expensive materials to get creative on a rainy day! Crafting is one of the activities for children that encourage their fine motor skills, creativity and imagination. At the same time you strengthen their self-confidence with the crafting success, because they were able to create something themselves.

Bone growth

Bake or cook

When children are allowed to create their own pizza, cut out and decorate cookies, stir muffin batter and decorate the tartlets themselves with love pearls, time flies in no time.

And the homemade creations from the kitchen taste particularly good afterwards. If you let the kids paint their own aprons beforehand, the day will be perfect.

Mix cocktails

Look for recipes for non-alcoholic cocktails on the internet and calculate the amount of ingredients down to “child portion” so that in the end there is one glass of cocktail per child.

Provide the children with the recipes, ingredients and enough measuring cups and kitchen scales, and turn them all into bartenders. Of course, colored sugar for the edge of the glass, paper umbrellas and candied fruits should not be missing to decorate the cocktails!

Little ones with a sweet tooth will love the hot chocolate with marshmallows

Chocolate fondue

Children love chocolate! And before they enjoy the sweet fondue, they can help you prepare the ingredients for it: strawberries, bananas, raspberries, pears …

Work before pleasure! And maybe a piece of fruit or two will find their way into the child’s mouth while chopping and filling the little tummy so much that later on, not as much of the chocolate fondue will fit into it …

mime

The children in turn are allowed to pantomime a word, the rest of the gang has to guess what it is. Young children enjoy guessing everyday things or animals. You decide whether sounds like “beep, beep!” Are allowed.

Using the same principle, you can also play with a blackboard, on which older children are allowed to draw but not write and are supposed to represent more abstract things like “vacation” or “weather”. The older the players, the more complicated it gets – also suitable for adults!

Make up stories

Adults meet at “poetry slam” events, why not children too? You set the beginning of the story or just a few words, the children invent their own story and tell it. Either completely spontaneously and freely or with prior writing down.

You can also have a “writers’ afternoon” where each child makes their own book. Provide enough Din A 5 sheets of paper and set the framework for the story by naming words that should appear in it.

Every child starts writing, illustrating their story with their own drawings and at the end of the day you bind the books with a clamp rail to form a “book”.
